Have you ever noticed that when you bookmark some pages, instead of the standard Webpage icon showing up next to it there's a custom icon there?

Well, in actuality, that's not hard to do at all!

All you need to do is create a 16x16 pixel icon and then save it as favicon.ico. If your graphics program doesn't support .ico files, you will need to get one that does (such as Microangelo).

After it's saved as favicon.ico, upload it to your root directory (the same one your index.html or index.php is located in) and voila! Now when you bookmark the page, the little icon displays!

NOTE: If you already have the site bookmarked, you will have to delete it, load the page, and bookmark the site again. wink.gif

Update 3/18/2005
Some browsers will not display the favicon.ico automatically simply by uploading it to your root directory. I have noticed Mozilla sometimes does and sometimes does not.

In any event, the following is valid html code you can add inside your HEAD tags to show the browser where the favicon is located. It will not hurt your page, and will help some browsers see this icon if they don't automatically:

HTML
<link rel="icon" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon">
