OK...so now you've played with your basic webpage formatting. At the point you start this tutorial, you should be able to easily start an html document and save it with an .htm or .html format so that when you try to open it, it will open in Internet Explorer.

At this point, you may be asking, "Well this is great...now how do I go back into this html document I have made and make edits?"

The answer to this is simple...you can:

  • right click on your html file and choose Open With->Notepad
  • drag and drop your html document onto the notepad icon on your desktop
  • from within your web browser, choose View->Source and this will open your html document in notepad. When you are done editing you can choose Save As and save it overtop of your existing file.

If you have any questions at this point please take a break from this exciting new venture and visit our forum designated to help you with web desgin at bfarber.com. smile.gif

On to cool tags you can use on your webpage now biggrin.gif

Sure, at this point you can have all sorts of fun writing text on your webpage, but what does this really do? Not much, right?

Well, here are some more tags for you to play with

This text is bold
This text is italic
This text is underlined

Some more basic tags...

The rest of the tags I am about to show are very basic...there is nothing more to them other than what you see, and they basically just format text slightly differently...however, that doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't use them which is why I'm giving them to you now. (Though on a side note, I have almost never used any of the following tags...the same thing can be done through styles wink.gif ).

This is big text
This is small text
This is emphasized text
This is strong text
This is inserted text
This is deleted text

This is strikethrough text
This is also strikethrough text
This is subscript text
This is superscript text
This is teletype text
This is "code" text
This is "keyboard" text
This is "sample code" text
This is a variable
US
WWW
Definition term
Defines a citation
ABC
123 Street
City, State Zip

This text is displayed right to left
This text is displayed left to right
Here is a short quote: The q tag is used for short quotations
Here comes a long quote:
This is a somewhat longer quotation
just being used to show you how the tag
works...nice, huh?

As stated previously, most of the tags above can be ignored unless actually needed, and some don't even really change the display of the text (such as the dfn tag)...they are just included here for completeness. smile.gif

Now, let's talk about some general guidelines to follow when making your webpages

When you use tags as I have shown above, you have the option to use uppercase or lowercase...while either should work, it is most recommended that you stick to lowercase. Why? The reason is that in future versions of HTML you will not be able to use uppercase tags...better to be ready for the future now, when it is something so easy to avoid wink.gif

Also, many tags have what are called attributes...these are extra commands you add within the tags that will alter how the tag works. There is some debate over whether you should use single qutes ( ' ) or double quotes ( " ) when using these attributes...either is acceptable.

Hmmmm....I am going to take a break here and let you digest what I have presented. The only thing I am going to point out is that so far, I have not presented any attributes yet (except for the title attribute for some of the text commands).

And remember...direct all questions to myself in the proper forum (the one under Web Design->HTML).
