Is Windows Update failing? Are you getting error codes like - 0x8DDD0018 ?
Well I had this problem and after many an hour happily searching for a fix 
, including following MS's advice on updating BITS, I discovered that you need to set the 'Automatic Updates' service to AUTOMATIC !!
Why oh why couldn't MS post this little nugget of information instead of going on about BITS?? 
Anyway, I hope this helps someone

I appreciate this post.
I am actually running SP2 here at work, and have had no problems with v5 of Windows Update, but this post will be great for those who do, and who have also had trouble finding the solution.
